India's growing private space sector

Following the success of Chandrayaan-3, the Indian space industry expects significant growth. In the past, it was dominated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and the role of the private sector was limited. In recent years, however, there has been a surge in private space companies, especially after the pandemic attracted global investment. The Indian Space Policy 2023 promotes private participation in comprehensive space activities, but requires more precise regulations.

Around 140 space start-ups have emerged in India, with a significant increase in investments seen in 2021. Start-ups like Skyroot Aerospace and Bellatrix Aerospace are becoming key players. The success of Chandrayaan-3 has increased interest in these companies at a time when start-up funding is generally declining. India's share of the global space market currently stands at 2 to 3%, but is projected to grow to 8 to 10% over the next decade.

Domestic companies are innovating in satellite launches, orbit management, and more, with a focus on the growing need for connectivity and defense communications. The market for satellite services in India is expanding, particularly in media, retail, and defense. Significant growth is also expected in remote sensing by 2025.

The "Make in India" initiative aims to promote satellite manufacturing, making it one of the fastest-growing sectors of the Indian space industry. The space parks under development will foster the growth of space technology companies and attract global start-ups.

Finally, international investors are actively investing in the Indian space sector. Significant investments include Alphabet's $36 million in Pixxel and Skyroot Aerospace's $51 million. Several factors, including government support, technological advancement, and the potential for high returns, are driving investment in the Indian space sector.
